The Chiado Church was built in 1839 by the architect Nuno Álvares Pereira. Relics of medieval Lisbon, this imposing Gothic monument survived the devastating earthquake of 1755. All that remains of the original structure are time-worn arches that have weathered the elements and stand in stark contrast with the blue sky and sunlight that filters through the structures bare-bones remains. In the Chiado museum located here, visitors can see prehistoric and Roman objects. Concerts of classical music are organized during the summer.
