Home to the 1492-built Nederluleå church, Gammelstad is a historic town in Sweden. The Gammelstad Church Town, along with the medieval church, is Gammelstad’s claim to fame. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites comprise over hundreds of wooden abodes, making it the most well-preserved settlement of its kind. Geographical constraints and limited options of commute led to the rise of church villages in northern Scandinavia. While the pristine ecclesiastical town in Gammelstad is an exemplar of one such village, the town’s open-air museum Friluftsmuseet Hägnan is a major draw too.
