A retreat for the elite of the 19th-century "Gilded Age," Jekyll Island is a museum of charming winter "cottages" that are small mansions. Located in the Golden Isles east of Brunswick, the museum tells the story of the private lifestyles of the Jekyll Island Club members with photographs and artifacts that included the Pulitzers, Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Goodyear, Morgans, and other millionaires. The museum also has a gift shop. Admission to the museum is free. It offers a guided 90-minute Passport to the Century tour with stops at cottages that are open to the public and a few art galleries.
