New Bern is a beautiful city that once served as the first capital of North Carolina. Steeped in rich history, New Bern is home to four historic districts that have earned their place in the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can take a heritage tour of the districts to explore the wonderful architectural gems such as commercial buildings, charming old houses, and shops, along with colorful crape myrtle gardens and flowerbeds. Tryon Palace is an important historic landmark here, which also serves as a local history museum. Other attractions include the Birthplace of Pepsi Cola, New Bern Civil War Battlefield Park, and New Bern Firemen's Museum.
