The Milk Market was originally built in 1830, and was reconstructed in 1994. Two of the four enclosing walls of the Market were built on the foundations of the original walls of Limerick. Originally the market sold mostly homegrown produce including vegetables, corn and milk (hence the name). It is still a thriving Saturday country market selling vegetables, homemade butter, cheese, bread, flora and homemade beauty products. Retail units surround the market selling a range of clothing, lace, linen and pottery; these units are open six days a week. Social banter and bargaining chat can be continually heard from the stalls.
