Plac Defilad 1, Warsaw, 00-901
The Palace of Culture and Science depicts Poland's turbulent history. A product of Soviet architecture, it stands tall even today, years after it was built. The tower was built in the 1950s and stands 234 meters (767 feet) tall, soaring over the city center. Completed in three years, the building boasts 3288 rooms including three theaters, swimming pool, four museums and a congress hall for 3000 people. There is also a shopping arcade within its confines. Formerly known as Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science, the name was removed in the aftermath of the leader's death. Architect Lev Rudnev based the design of this building on his previous works such as the main building of Moscow State University. However, Renaissance influences seen in Polish residences were added to the design. A popular tourist attraction, the terrace of this landmark offers terrific views of the city.
