The origin of the name is very simple; land of the Letto barons, near Manoppello. It was known by the Romans for the sulphur and bitumen deposits that were exploited and there was a slave colony nearby at Fonte Marte. To the south east of the center, the Iconicella sanctuary is a place for pilgrimages as it holds a miraculous icon of the Madonna of Constantinople. Also to the south, five hundred meters from here, is the Praie cave, with stalactites, and nearby the Garzillo river, is the dell'Angelo cave. There is a statue from the Longobard period here, of the Archangel Michael with a cross and flower in his hand. The original is no longer here, but in the Museum of the People of Abruzzo. There are many interesting stone huts in the area. From Pescara take the A25, to the Scafa-Alanno exit.
