Your visit could begin at the Castello Svevo, which was rebuilt in the 16th Century, and then continue on to the old town where you can visit the cathedral. Lots of illustrious sovereigns contributed to the building of the cathedral, including: Ruggero II The Norman, his son William II, also known as William The Bad, Margherita Navarra, and Richard Plantagenet, also known as Richard The Lion Heart. The latter, according to the studies carried out on the images painted in the church, came through the town during his third Crusade and contributed money to the building of the left apse. Next, you could visit the Basilica of Santo Sepolcro, an example of Gothic style. There is a famous bronze colossus next to the basilica. It is a late Roman statue depicting an emperor of uncertain identity (possibly Valentine I or Honorius), who arrived in Barletta from Constantinople at the end of the Middle Ages. A walk down Via Cialdini is very evocative, as it still conserves some medieval houses and a characteristic dueling cellar (for French and Italian soldiers), as well as some Baroque monuments, and the late 16th-century Palazzo della Marra, with allegorical scenes painted on the façade. Barletta also contains a museum and an art gallery in Castello Svevo. The museum showcases sculptures, ceramics, and archaeological finds from Canne della Battaglia.
