Rynek Starego Miasta is the true heart of the Old Town, and until the end of the 18th Century, it was also the center of Warsaw. Here the representatives of guilds and merchants met in the Town Hall, held fairs and local events. The four sides of this vast square are named after the most famous 18th-century Polish parliamentarians. Destroyed during World War II, the square was rebuilt to look as it did in the 17th Century when it was mostly inhabited by merchant families. Bustling with life thanks to little cafes and street performers, it's a good place to stop for a while and to just admire the architecture. Tasting some local beer and food in one of the many restaurants located here is also a good idea.
