Juan de la Cosa, companion in troubled times of Christopher Columbus and responsible for the first world map was from this coastal town. Among its architectural heritage, it's worth mentioning the following: the church of Santa María del Puerto (14th century), the palaces of Chiloeches and Manzanedo, as well as the forts of San Martín and San Carlos, which all serve to clearly illustrate the strategic importance of this place throughout its history. The place is famous for the sea carnivals held here and the big canning industry. The Reserva Natural de las Marismas de Santoña, (Natural Reserve for the Santoña Marshes) is a protected area with various ecosystems where you can see a multitude of sea birds. To get here: take the motorway to Bilbao for about 50 kilometres.
