Hans Sachs, who was a shoemaker by profession, is one of the city's most well-loved historical figures, having written thousands of songs, plays and poems. Sculptor Konrad Kraußers statue from 1874, which stands in the middle of a square, also named after Sachs, depicts the poet sitting down, surrounded by books.
