Carrere & Hastings, architects of the New York Public Library and the Frick Museum, designed the Jefferson Hotel. A column-encircled rotunda and a fine-art collection, which includes portraits of the seven U.S. presidents born in Virginia, add to the grandeur of this classic hotel. The marble grand staircase was the model for the one in the film, "Gone With the Wind." The guest books have included nine U.S. Presidents and scores of celebrities, including Elvis Presley and Charlie Chaplin. The downtown location is convenient to restaurants, entertainment and attractions.
