TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The capital of the north Navarre region is about an hour away from Biarritz. Founded in the 12th century, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port only became a fortified town in the 17th century, when the citadel was redesigned. Typically Basque, its pedestrian streets are filled with old signs and traditional shops. A rich history - the town is situated on the pilgrims' way to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle - seeps from every street corner. A visit to the Prison des Evêques (bishops' prison) is highly recommended for its magnificent underground room, its guardroom, and its exhibition on the art and traditions of the Navarre region.
