Augustusplatz occupies an important spot in the heart of the city center. Named after the Saxon King August, the square was, until recently, known as Karl-Marx-Platz in honor of Germany's favorite political philosopher. Most of the city's cultural institutions can be found here, including the Gewandhaus, the Museum der bildenden Künste and several university faculties. Leipzig's Opera House is also located here. Visitors should at the very least, spend an hour admiring the buildings, but it would certainly be worthwhile taking longer and having a look inside a couple of these famous cultural institutions.
