Opened in 1894 as an independent city theater, Flensburg's theater is part of the Schleswig-Holstein County theater and a venue for its productions today. Great classics as well as light entertainment and musical plays are on the programme, while the house's own new studio stage is a venue for the more experimental productions and plays. The building at Rathausstraße was thoroughly refurbished and modernised in the year 2000. The technical equipment was improved, the stage and lounges for the audience during intervals were enlarged, and a small extra theater was also built. The modernised house re-opened with a huge opera premiere at Christmas. Many refreshing changes have been introduced to the traditional theater - not only a new look, but also a new management, so the audience can look forward to the coming performances.
