The Berlin State Library houses over 10 million volumes in its two buildings. This expansive collection includes written work in a multitude of languages. First established in the mid 1600s, the collection was scattered across monasteries and castles throughout Easter Europe during World War II. Reassembled in 1992 in new buildings constructed in the mid 1900s, the library is open for public use and includes departments for manuscripts, music, Eastern Europe, and East Asia. Also associated with the library is the Prussian Cultural Heritage Picture Archive located at Märkisches Ufer 16-18. Some of the library's most famous contents include the main autograph collection of Goethe and the original score of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.
