Work started on the building of St. John at Hackney Church in 1792 and took over 2 years. St. John's is now a popular and active church involving all members of the community. The churchyard has lasted since medieval times and includes countless trees, gardens and historical memorials. The gardens include St. Augustine's Tower, the remainder of the medieval parish church. Erected in the 13th Century, the Tower stands as the oldest building in the town.
