Republic of Ireland
A destination that has been in the tourist trade since the 18th Century when Thomas, fourth Viscount Kenmare, began to devise ways in which to attract visitors to the city. Killarney enchants with the abundant natural beauty of its surroundings and its vast heritage. Alluring landscapes of towering mountains, serene lakes and dense woodlands are aplenty, with ample trails to explore on foot. Here stands Ireland's first national park, spread over an area of 10,522 hectares (26,000 acres) - the Killarney National Park. While the more adventurous can embark on rappelling, kayaking and hiking excursions, those who prefer more sedate encounters with the outdoors can try their hand at fishing or golf. The city also wears its history well, with sites like Ross Castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, Muckross Abbey and Muckross House doubling up as architectural icons. Along the way are a fair share of restaurants, pubs and hotels. The best time to visit is in late spring and early autumn when the weather is still favorable but the crowds are thin.
