Perched on the bank of the River Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne owes its name to the castle built here by Robert II in 1080 CE. The city is one of the largest and most populous in the United Kingdom and is known for its ties to the Royal Shakespeare Company's annual performance at the heritage Theatre Royal.
