Sweden's second-largest city is very much in tune with its nautical past, its canal-riddled core traversed by trams that rattle past strings of neo-classical buildings and seafarer sites. Its many neighborhoods are distinctive enclaves that showcase the city's transition from a primarily Dutch trading colony to a thriving university town, the Nordic countries' largest port and a vibrant city of culture. The Haga District is a popular locale, one of Gothenburg's oldest with roots that go back to the 17th Century. Its cobblestone streets are lined with vintage fronts, hip cafes and esoteric boutiques, while in summer and just before Christmas, the entire neighborhood seems to morph into a seasonal market. Speaking of markets, the Feskekôrka, or Fish Church, is the city's aptly named seafood market, where visitors can feast on the fresh catch of the day. There are plenty of upscale options to explore as well, especially down Avenyn Boulevard. For some fun in the sun, the Gothenburg Archipelago is the place to be, while Liseberg Amusement Park promises wholesome entertainment for the whole family. The Botanical Gardens are another popular feature, while Swedish design and fashion boutiques, museums and art galleries are aplenty. Paired with a year-round smorgasbord of festivals like the Gothenburg Film Festival, Way Out West and Metaltown, there's never a dearth of interest in Gothenburg.
