The George Washington Masonic Memorial pays homage to the United States' first president and his affiliation with the Masons. After Washington's death, many of his belongings were put away for safekeeping, but a fire destroyed some of these precious artifacts. In response to this, many of the Masonic leaders came together to plan a memorial that would both honor Washington, and protect Washington-related artifacts. Thus the memorial was created, which features a 333-foot (101-meter) granite tower modeled after an ancient lighthouse in Alexandria, Egypt, which visitors can climb. Visitors to the memorial can also go on guided tours that explore the various famous artifacts - including a Washington family Bible and the clock a doctor stopped the moment that Washington died.
