Tracing its origins to the 3rd Century and primarily associated with being a spa town, Merano has also attracted intellectuals, scientists and artists like Ezra Pound and Franz Kafka, who chose to live here owing to the pleasant climate. Located to the north of Italy and bordering Austria, it is hardly surprising that over 51 percent of the town's population speaks German until date. Visit Merano for the resplendent Trauttmannsdorf Castle, botanical gardens, vineyards and summer concerts that take place along the promenades.
