A small island off the northwestern coast of France, Mont Saint-Michel is one of France's most spectacular and most-visited landmarks. The island is best-known to house the abbey it derives its name from; a fairy-tale structure that is beautifully interwoven with the island's hilly landscape. While the abbey forms the striking epicenter of this picturesque island, on its fringes lies a sparsely-populated town - from souvenir shops and local museums, to small hotels. The island is also a commune by itself and stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Access to the island is possible on foot or by bus during low tide.
