Surrounded by the rippled waters of the commodious Kalmar Strait, this defensive military fortification has stood on the iconic Kalmarsund for more than seven eventful centuries. A true Scandinavian renaissance masterpiece, the castle's prime objective was to guard the city against pirate raids and foreign invaders which was a common occurrence during the 13th and 14th-centuries. An important ceremonial venue at its peak, it regularly hosted high-profile political gatherings during the reign of Margaret I of Denmark. Subjected to a few architectural modifications, in 1856 Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander was charged with adding the Slott's moat and the distinctive drawbridge that stands to this day. Today the castle is home to many exhibitions. For children, there are special activities planned during the summer months.
