TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Kloster Altzella was once a famed monastery at the heart of Saxony. Dating as far back as the 12th century, the abbey was built by the monks of the Cistercian Order as the central base of Saxony. After its dissolution in 1540, the building was abandoned and eventually fell to ruin. The surrounding gardens currently consist of a park and a few other restored buildings, including a Mausoleum containing the tomb of the Wettin dynasty.
