TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Kloster Marienrode was built in 1125 as an Augustinian monastery and became a Cistercian abbey in the 13th Century. Its magnificent Gothic church was constructed between 1412 to 1463. During the 17th and 18th Centuries, the abbey got its current Baroque form. After dissolution in the early 19th Century, it became a farm from 1806 to 1986. It was bought by the diocese of Hildesheim who transformed it to its original glory and made it a Benedictine nunnery. Today the complex also has a guest house, an art shop, garden and two ponds. You can also visit the property with prior admission from the nuns.
