What characterizes the landscape of Malcesine is Castello Scaligero, with its high tower located on a rocky spur. The castle has Lombard origins and was attacked and destroyed by the Franks in 590. After a short period of abandonment, it was rebuilt and in 806 hosted King Pipino several times, son of Charlemagne. After the conquests of the Hungarians in the late first millennium, it became a fiefdom of the Bishop of Verona. The village developed around boulders topped by an imposing castle, and it still has the characteristics of a medieval town.
