Founded by King Gustav I, with an aim to fortify Stockholm, the Vadstena Castle was established in 1545. The beautiful castle, overlooking Lake Vättern is located close to the prestigious Vadstena Abbey. Interestingly, the sight was also where the King married Catherine Stenbock. A fine example of architecture that dates back to the Renaissance era, the Vadstena slott now houses the Castle Museum which incorporates magnificent vintage pieces that were a part of the castle use, beautiful paintings, furniture and such. Vadstena Slott, associated with International Vadstena Academy, hosts several concerts in its courtyard. Open between May and September, the open hours at the site keep changing, refer to the website or call ahead. Guided tours are available for groups.
