Since its establishment in 1932, Flugplatz Ballenstedt has enjoyed an eventful existence. Despite intermittent periods of inactivity, the airfield remains operational even today. Its proximity to the Harz Mountains, and the availability of facilities like border and customs clearance, refueling stations, a restaurant, access to public transport and car rentals have made the airfield a popular choice amongst aircraft enthusiasts. The asphalt runway is suitable for smaller aircrafts like gliders, helicopters, hot-air balloons and ultra-light aircrafts, and can be used by parachutists as well. Festivals, air shows and other events are often organized at Flugplatz Ballenstedt.
