Czestochowa is known in Poland as the city where the painting of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa is held. The painting is kept at the Jasna Góra monastery. The monastery was founded in 1382 by Pauline monks, and the painting is the most important religious icon in this part of Europe. The city is best known for a semi-authentic story taken from Henryk Sienkiewicz's "Potop / The Deluge" when it withstood an attack by the Swedes. Although of little military importance, it stimulated the Polish resistance against the occupants. Nowadays, the city, though not very big, is popular with pilgrims who want to see the holy painting.
