Pula Arena

One of the best-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the continent, Pula Arena is an enormous amphitheater gracing the recesses of Pula. Dating to as far back as 27 BCE, the theater bears a sturdy limestone construction which has stood strong even in the face of fights and battles. Touted to be one of the largest of its kind in the entire world, the arena played an integral role in carving out the cultural and architectural landscape of Pula. What is left of the theater today is a tapestry of arches, rectangular windows, towers and a timeworn cavea arrangement which also lends much insight into the social and communal nuances of the bygone times. From valiant gladiators and musical geniuses to combats and medieval tournaments, this arena is a ground breathing with monumental history and legend. Although much of its fabric has given in to the ravages of time, the arena yet stands as a grand testament to the undying Roman legacy. Accentuated by the glimmering blue waters of the sea, the arena is also the ground of the annual Pula Festival.
