Beffroi de Tournai is Belgium's significant belfry which is counted amongst the popular landmarks of the country. Built in 1188, the belfry served as a prison, a watchtower and a city hall. The towering structure was built during the reign of Philip Augustus, king of France according to his social charters. You can climb the 265 steps to catch the gasping vistas of the town and see the colossal carillon with 44 bells. You can also find here a small exhibition that enunciates the history of the belfry.
