Currently the county town of Norfolk, Norwich was once one of the most populous cities in all of England. Although long considered a backwater, Norwich has recently made an effort to shed that reputation by promoting the city as premiere shopping and leisure destination. The city boasts one of the largest shopping areas in the UK as well as a litany of theaters, clubs, concert halls and museums. Founded in the 1960s, the University of East Anglia sits at the edge of town and is a scientific and cultural center for the region.
