Built by the ancient family Malatesta, the Gradara Castle is an amazing and impregnable fortress. It has 700 meters (2,296.5 feet) of wall with 17 towers and three draw-bridges. Dante made the castle particularly famous, with his telling of the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca. After centuries of private ownership, the castle was acquired in 1983 by the Italian state, and is now open to the public.
