Built as a stunning Franciscan friary in the 19th Century, this High Victorian Gothic masterpiece remains one of the most striking exemplars of religious architecture in England. Nearly seven years after it was closed for worship in 1989, its ornate beauty merited it a place on the World Monuments Fund Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites, along with other famous world landmarks such as the Taj Mahal. Subjected to a structural revamp in 2007, the former friary still maintains its old world charm despite modern developments, remaining the highlight of Edward Welby Pugin's architectural career.
