80 Broad Street, Charleston, SC, United States, 29401
Located on the corner of Meeting and Broad Streets, this beautiful 1801 building constructed in the European Adamesque style of architecture was originally the Bank of the United States. In 1818, it became Charleston's City Hall. The basement is a museum where visitors can view a 15-minute film on the history of the building. Free tours are available at the second floor council chambers (9a to 1p and from 2p to 5p Monday through Friday). Also, wrought iron works by Charleston's famous blacksmith, Phillip Simmons, are incorporated into the windows. The gallery exhibits commissioned portraits of political visitors. This includes a 1791 portrait of George Washington and one of President James Monroe. There is no admission charge. -Natasha Lawrence
