When it was added in National Historic Landmark and National Register of Historic Places in 2014, it became the first historic structure to be included in the Greater Orlando area. A part of the Art & History Museums - Maitland, the Maitland Art Center is one of the rare examples of Mayan Revival architecture in the region. It was established in 1937 as an art colony for struggling artists by Jules André Smith. Today, it has galleries showcasing contemporary art by artists across the globe. It also hosts residency programs and art programs. This repository holds an impressive collection from its founders' selection. These include artworks by Smith himself and other notable artists of that era and the following times. The facility itself is a unique piece of art that gives a glimpse of the Mayans and Aztecs.
