Dom St. Peter und Paul

What was earlier a cathedral of the Zeitz bishops, is the Dom St. Peter und Paul church today. Established way back in the 10th Century, the church has a rich history and many time-worn relics from the bygone era have been well preserved. During the 14th and 15th Century, the church was renovated and Gothic elements were added to its structure. The church altar is breathtakingly beautiful with ornate designs. The church houses a crypt that has coffins of family members of the royal family of Sachsen-Zeitz, including the Duke Moritz, Sophie Elisabeth, Friedrich August, and the five year old Maria Sophia. The church organ was first built in the 15th Century and was modified several times over the years. The church bells belong to the 15th Century as well.
