Europe's largest cultural cave, Balver Höhle finds a mention in the Thidrekssaga. Balver Höhle, or the Balve Cave, hosts the annual Schutzenfest, a tradition that has been carried out for the past 160 years. In the year 1985, the renowned arts festival, Festpiele Balver Hohle was founded and the opening act was a mystery play by the noted artistic director, Hermann Wedekind. The debut oriental musical of Festpiele Balver Hohle was performed in the year 1998. Apart from the Schutzenfest and the Festpiele Balver Hohle, this cultural cave hosts a variety of festivals that take advantage of the cave's natural acoustics and scenic location.
