TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Built on a grand Baroque design on the banks of River Reuss, Lucerne Jesuit Church is one of the first of its kind in Switzerland. Constructed in 1667, this church was a symbol of resistance to the Protestant Reformation and is a visual illustration of the catholic faith as understood by the Jesuit Order. Topped by onion domes that were added in 1893 and ornamented with lavish stucco work, this church bears a visage that is just as glorious as its interior. Considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in Switzerland, Jesuitenkirche was built by architects from Italy and Austria and dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier. Beneath an ornate vault, this Baroque church houses the ceremonial robes of Brother Klaus. Not only does the church chronicle tales of the Counter-reformation movement, but its very fabric also seems to resound with the voices of a faithful, Catholic congregation. Today, the church doubles up as a splendid venue for classical and religious concerts.
