Stuttgart's Rathaus serves as the Mayor's official residence and the cultural center of the city. The original town hall was a magnificent structure that stood at the same site until 1944, when it was destroyed during the air raids of World War II. The current building was constructed in 1956 using a modern architectural style, while imitating some of the historic details. The hall commands a magnificent view of the Marktplatz (Market Square) and organizes various exhibitions and cultural programs. It also provides buggy rentals for touring the city, and houses an information center and children's playroom.
