German cities are known for their central market squares but the one in Rothenburg ob der Tauber presents a different world altogether. Stepping into this square feels like entering an ancient Roman world with Patrician houses. It is impossible to focus on one particular mansion as each building bordering Marktplatz surpasses the previous one. The most important building, the Rathaus (town hall), is an imposing structure with awe-inspiring Renaissance architecture. The market square existed even in the 17th Century and was the site of both bloody skirmishes and exuberant festivals. Today, firework shows, traditional Shepherd’s dances, legendary dramas, local festivals and colorful markets are held here.
