One of the most important monuments in Catalonia, the Castle of Cardona sits majestically on a hilltop with a panoramic view of the river valley of Cardener and Cardona. With over 1,000 years of history, this fortress from the Middle Ages has traces of the Romanesque and Gothic architectural designs and was the home of the Cardonian lords from the 11th to the 15th centuries. It was the last fortress to surrender to the Bourbon troops led by Philip V thereby playing a pivotal role in the War of Succession. The castle is an exemplary example of military citadel showcasing the transformation of military arts from the Medieval period to the present. Split into two parts - the lords’ quarters and the Canonical San Vicenç Church area, some of the noteworthy sites are the Minyona Tower, castle bastions and the Ducal Courtyard. The fort is now a luxury hotel run by the state.
