The Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial is one of the few National Historic Sites of Canada that is actually located outside Canada. Situated in Beaumont-Hamel, France, this site was built in memory of the Dominion of Newfoundland force soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. This memorial was built on a former battlefield, where the Dominion of Newfoundland forces made an unsuccessful attack during the Battle of Somme. The site also includes graves of some soldiers who were never identified, and the Caribou Monument, symbolizing the Canadian role played in the conflict. The visitor's center on site gives a detailed version about the war along with free tours of the site.
