In 642 CE, Oswald, King of Northumbria, built a church at Grasmere. Although this church no longer exists, the current St. Oswald's church is dedicated to him, and is believed to have been built at the same site, or close to the site of the original church. The existing structure of the St. Oswald's church was built in the 14th Century with a number of additions and alterations made to it over the years. Although this church by the River Rothay is noteworthy of itself, it has become renown as the final resting place of William Wordsworth and his family. The famed poet's grave can be found in the church graveyard alongside those of his family. Although it no longer serves a practical purpose, the church still celebrates the annual Rushbearing Ceremony in July. If you happen to be visiting at that time, be sure to drop by and witness this now rare ceremony. Visitors are always welcome to join in the services.
