Heidelberg University is Germany's oldest university. Established in 1386, the university is an important cultural institution. Heidelberg university has expanded and grown over the years to include several new campuses across the city. However, it is the old campus at Universitätsplatz that is the best known. It's unique architecture and fascinating history make it a must-visit. Great minds like Max Weber, Robert Bunsen and Ernst Troeltsch left their mark on the university and the world. The university underwent a dark period in it's history during the Nazi regime, from which it had to slowly recover post WWII. Today, the University has an excellent reputation over the world. Places of interest include the Great Hall, The University Library and the historic Student Jail.
