Assisi is a town in the Umbria region which dates all the way back to 1000 BCE when the Umbrians began to settle here. The city came under Roman rule for a while before it came under the rule of the church. As the birthplace of Saint Francis, the place sees both pilgrims and tourists alike. Some places to visit while in the city include the many churches, a Roman amphitheater, the temple dedicated to Minerva, the communal square and so on. The town is also known for its varied pieces of art found in churches and other buildings. In fact, UNESCO has recognized all the Franciscan architecture in the city as a World Heritage Site.
