Magnificent in architecture and monumental in its proportions, the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of the finest masterpieces in the city of Sofia. Spread over an area of 3170 square meters (34,100 square feet), the cross-domed cathedral can accommodate over 5000 people. Considered to be one of the largest church buildings in Europe and the world, the mammoth structure took 30 years to be manifested in its full glory. Named after Prince Alexander Nevsky, the cathedral’s main dome is plated in gold and is one of the most breathtaking sights. Constructed with great attention to detail, the ornate interiors are ornamented with Brazilian onyx stone and marble carvings. Intricate iconography gleams under the stunning chandeliers in the nave of the cathedral. Sofia’s piece de resistance, this Neo-Byzantine cathedral is a spectacular attraction.
