Recognized by UNESCO as a Geopark Area, Mølen is one of the region's most magnificent geological and cultural attractions. The stone beach is Norway's largest and was formed at the end of the last Ice Age. The beach is home to 230 cairns that were added over time, creating a seaside cemetery that is surreal in its stoic beauty. Over 200 small cairns have been arranged in parallel rows along the shore, beside 16 distinctly large ones. Although primarily a burial site, the cairns of Mølen may have also served the purpose of markers for navigation. The beach is also a site of immense natural beauty, featuring hundreds of native stone species. Twice a year, Mølen is thronged by thousands of migratory birds, attracting avid bird-watchers and lay tourists alike. The easiest way to access the beach is on foot via the North Sea Trail.
