The Postojna Cave is a subterranean maze of caverns, passages and halls, carved from limestone by the Pivka River over two million years ago. With a total span of 24 kilometers (15 miles) the Postojna is Slovenia's second-longest cave system, an otherworldly enclave of karst formations shielded from the outside world by a labyrinthine realm. Weathered by water over time, the caves enclose forests of stalagmites and stalactites, punctuated by baroque columns and other intriguing forms that mimic miniature palaces, stone ribbons and curtains of translucent glass. The Brilliant stalagmite is one of the cave's most distinctive features, a startling white pinnacle of 5 meters (16.4 feet) like the jagged tooth of some long-lost gigantic creature. Amid this realm of needles, spires and dripping cascades of stone, over 150 species thrive, the most remarkable being the Human Fish, or Proteus - a subterranean vertebrate with a lifespan of 100 years and a distinct likeness to the fabled dragons. Live concerts are occasional hosted here as well, taking advantage of the cave's glorious natural acoustic qualities and ethereal environs.
